Tree Trimming

Tree Trimming/ Pruning

Whether trimming for clearence or appearance, proper pruning techniques can mean the difference bewteen your tree living a long, healthy life or contracting a disease and dying in just a few seasons. This is the major reason it is very important to have your trees trimmed by qualified technicians. Maybe your favorite Oak is filled with dead or your Maple is growing too far over your home, driveway or other cirtical areas of your property. Whatever the case arborists with M.W.T.L. will always utilize proper pruning techniques while at the same time getting your tree to look exactly how your like. The following terms are often used when discribing different styles of pruning.

-CLEANING: Cleaning referes to the removal of dead, dying, diseased, crowded, weakly attached and low-vigor limbs from the crown of the tree.

-THINNING: Thinning is the selective removal of the limbs to increase light penetration and air movement thorugh the crown. Thinning opens the foilage of the tree, reduces weight on heavy limbs and helps retain the tree's natural shape.

-RASING: Rasing removes the lower branches from a tree in order to provide clearance on the ground and allow for more sunlight underneath the tree's canopy.

-REDUCTION: Reduction reduces the size of the tree, often for clearance of utility lines. Reducing height or spread of a tree is best accomplished by pruning back the leaders and branch terminals to lateral branches that are large enought to assume the terminal roles (at least 1/3 the diameter of the cut stem). Compared to topping this helps maintain the form and structural integrity of the tree.
